DİSK Basın-İş protested Israel, trade with Israel, and Israel's war crimes against journalists in front of the German Consulate in Taksim, Istanbul, on the "February 26 Day of Solidarity with Palestinian Journalists."
The Press, Broadcasting, and Printing Workers' Union of Turkey stated that Germany is the country providing the most support for Israel's war crimes, which is why they held a press statement in front of the German Consulate in Taksim.
"HUNDREDS OF JOURNALISTS HAVE BEEN MURDERED SINCE OCTOBER 7"
DİSK Basın-İş member Vecih Cuzdan, who read the press statement, said the following:
"We have filed a criminal complaint regarding Israel's crimes against journalists. Since October 7, Israeli forces have murdered hundreds of journalists. Almost all of them were targeted and shot while working in the field, wearing vests marked 'Press.' States that commit war crimes target journalists everywhere to ensure their crimes are not heard, and they try to intimidate them and discourage them from their profession. This is not the first time Israel has targeted journalists; Shireen Abu Akleh, a journalist known not only to Palestinians but to the entire Arab world, was killed by a sniper's bullet while reporting on an Israeli raid in the West Bank, despite wearing a 'Press' vest and being with her cameraman colleague.
"ISRAEL TARGETS NOT ONLY PALESTINIAN JOURNALISTS BUT ALSO WESTERN AGENCIES"
During the peace march of the people of blockaded Gaza, which began with a Facebook post by journalist and poet Ahmed Abu Artema and involved walking to the border, 2 journalists were killed and 357 were injured by sniper fire. Among them were those who were left disabled. Since October 7, Israel has been targeting not only Palestinian journalists but also the Lebanese press and Western agencies reporting from Palestine.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists' report, 75 percent of journalists killed worldwide in 2023 were Palestinian. Israel commits these crimes with the comfort provided by impunity. To date, it has not faced any sanctions. Although it was recently stated at the UN that arms sales to Israel should be stopped, arms sales continue. In Turkey, while spokespeople for the AKP government claim to support Palestine, commercial relations with Israel continue unabated.
This is the reason we are expressing our support for Palestinian journalists here today. That is why we remind everyone once again: Freedom for Palestine, boycott for Israel"
