On theDiyanet TV program "Let's Ask the Diyanet," High Board of Religious Affairs member İdris Bozkurtoffered advice regarding those working in environments where alcohol is present. When a viewer asked, "Does working in a hotel or market where alcohol is sold create a problem with the salary we receive?" Bozkurt replied, "Our Prophet curses not only the one who drinks it, but also the one who produces it, transports it, serves it, and even the one who manages its money and benefits from its proceeds. He says, 'May they be far from Allah's mercy.' A person working in such an establishment also benefits from alcohol revenue in some way. Even if they do not want to, and even if it is not direct, they are involved in this business." he stated.
Bozkurt also suggested that people who have no connection to alcohol should look for new jobs.
"VERY EXAGGERATED"
According to a report byCumhuriyet, theologian and author Cemil Kılıç,who was consulted on the matter, noted, "I think the Diyanet's fatwa on this issue is very exaggerated. It is natural for them to mention that drinking alcohol is harmful to health. It is also normal for them to mention that it is a sin in religion. However, claiming that those who drink, produce, or trade alcohol are cursed is an extreme approach."
