The U.S. Senate has confirmed renowned Turkish heart surgeon Mehmet Oz, whom President Donald Trump nominated as director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Oz has become the first Turk to lead this critical health agency.

Following a vote in the U.S. Senate, Mehmet Oz was appointed Director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) with 53 "yes" votes against 45 "no" votes. With this, Oz has become the first Turkish official to manage the United States' largest health insurance programs.
AT THE HELM OF A 1 TRILLION DOLLAR SYSTEM
CMS is known as the top health agency overseeing the Medicare and Medicaid programs, which provide health services for Americans over the age of 65 and low-income individuals. The agency, which manages health expenditures exceeding 1 trillion dollars annually, serves more than 160 million people in the U.S.
Medicare is the federal health insurance program for individuals aged 65 and older.
Medicaid covers the health insurance system provided to low-income citizens through the cooperation of states and the federal government.
Mehmet Oz, who has taken charge of this massive system, is seen as the beginning of a new era in U.S. health policies.
Speaking at a hearing held by the Senate Finance Committee last month, Oz emphasized the sustainability of health insurance systems and stated the following:
"I want patients to have the resources that will protect them if they get sick, today and in the future. The way to protect Medicaid is to ensure it is viable at every level."
In his speech, Oz also touched upon his medical background and the 10 Emmy Awards he has won, stating that he would focus on improving the life expectancy of Americans in line with the goals of CMS.
The U.S. press points out that Mehmet Oz's tenure as director aligns with the Trump administration's federal downsizing policies. In this context, approximately 300 employees within CMS are expected to be laid off.
Oz's appointment is interpreted as a sign that steps toward reducing costs in healthcare services will gain momentum.
