In Turkey, high inflation is making it difficult for many citizens to gauge prices, while some businesses are turning this situation into an opportunity by increasing product prices. Restaurant chains are raising food prices citing costs, while simultaneously increasing profit margins by shrinking portions.
A doner restaurant with a wide fast-food network in Turkey has drawn significant backlash on social media over the meat grammage on its menu. The restaurant announced that it uses 70 grams of meat in a '1 portion' iskender offered for 270 TL, while a '1.5 portion' iskender priced at 350 TL contains 90 grams of meat.
Industry experts argue that a single portion of iskender should contain at least 100 grams of meat, while the 'double iskender' the restaurant sells for 430 TL contains only 110 grams of meat. Social media users reacted to the situation, stating that products sold at similar prices in Europe contain two to three times more meat.
