Dr. Buğra Gökce announces as the fire in the kitchen grows: 'We are the worst-performing country'

While the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) announced inflation for August at 51.97% annually and 2.47% monthly, Istanbul Planning Agency (İPA) President Dr. Buğra Gökce made striking statements regarding food inflation. Gökce stated, "We are the worst-performing country among OECD members in terms of food inflation."

İPA President Dr. Buğra Gökce highlighted food inflation in Turkey with a graph he shared on his social media account following the inflation announcement by TÜİK.

44.88 PERCENT IN TURKEY

Gökce noted the following in his post:

 "The fire in the kitchen is growing: We are the worst-performing country among OECD members in terms of food inflation!

 According to TÜİK data, food inflation in Turkey was announced at 44.88 percent. 

 While food inflation in EU countries averages 1.6 percent, food inflation in OECD countries excluding Turkey averages 1.9 percent.

 Among OECD countries, the highest food inflation after Turkey is in Mexico at 7.7 percent. There is an approximately 6-fold difference between Turkey and Mexico.

THE WORST-PERFORMING COUNTRY AMONG ASIAN NATIONS

The food index in Turkey, which was 339 in January 2017, increased approximately 10-fold to reach 3,374 in August 2024. During the same period, the global food index only rose from 98 to 120. 

Turkey is the 4th country with the highest food inflation in the entire world. While food inflation in Palestine is 30.8 percent, it was 9.8 percent in Russia, which is at war, and -0.1 percent in Ukraine. 

Among Asian countries, Turkey is the worst-performing country in terms of food inflation. Food inflation was recorded at 2.4 percent in Pakistan, -0.6 percent in our neighbor Azerbaijan, and -0.2 percent in Georgia.

HIGHER THAN 43 OUT OF 45 COUNTRIES IN AFRICA

Food inflation in Turkey is higher than in 43 out of 45 African countries. Excluding South Sudan and Zimbabwe, the closest food inflation to Turkey is found in Malawi at 41.9 percent.

In terms of food inflation, Turkey has surpassed all countries in North and South America except for Argentina. While food inflation in Venezuela, which is under embargo and experiencing ongoing internal strife, was 41.4 percent, it was 5.2 percent in Colombia and 4.1 percent in Brazil.

Final word: The 85 million are paying the price for mistakes made in public administration. As the academic year begins, one in every 5 children in Turkey cannot be fed adequately. Problems are solved when there is participation, transparency, respect for the law, merit, reason, and science in governance."
