'Driving ban' on the agenda for drivers over 65

A new step has been taken regarding traffic regulations. Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya announced that a 32-article draft law has been prepared for amendments to the Highway Traffic Law. In this draft, penalties for red light violations will increase by 2-3 times. The offense of driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or stimulants will also be reorganized. A lifetime driving ban for citizens over 65 who fail to meet certain conditions in traffic is also on the agenda.
DRIVERS WHO EXCEED THE SPEED LIMIT 5 TIMES WILL HAVE THEIR LICENSES SUSPENDED FOR 3 YEARS
According to the report in Yeni Şafak, the AKP is preparing to submit a new legislative proposal in the coming days to amend the Highway Traffic Law. Within the scope of reports and impact analyses prepared by the Ministry of Interior, the causes of traffic accidents that occurred in the last two years were examined. It was deemed appropriate to amend 32 articles of the 200-article law. According to the information obtained, traffic fines will be increased proportionally by 100 to 200 percent. Penalties for red light and speeding violations will be made more deterrent. In this context, the driver's licenses of those found to have violated the red light rule three times within a year will be confiscated for 3 months. The licenses of those who violate the red light rule three times for a second time within the same year will be confiscated for 135 days, and the licenses of those who commit the same offense three times within a year will be confiscated for 180 days. The penalty of 1-year license suspension for those who commit the offense of exceeding the speed limit by more than thirty percent 5 times within a year will be increased to 3 years.
TOUGH PENALTIES FOR DRUNK DRIVING
The driver's license of those who drive under the influence of alcohol will be confiscated for at least one year. The 6-month license suspension penalty given to drivers found to be driving with an alcohol level above 0.50 promille will be increased to 1 year. Doubling this penalty, which has an upper limit of 5 years of license suspension, is also on the agenda. Increasing the license suspension period for drivers found to have taken drugs or stimulants from 5 years to 10 years is also on the agenda.
DRIVERS OVER 65 WITHOUT SUFFICIENT QUALIFICATIONS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO DRIVE
The requirements for obtaining a driver's license will also be changed. Traffic accidents caused by driving at an advanced age will also be evaluated within this scope. A lifetime driving ban for citizens over 65 who fail to meet certain conditions in traffic is also on the agenda. Drivers over 65 who do not have the physical and psychological qualifications will not be allowed to drive. Every driver over 65 will undergo these tests once a year.
