Earthquake advisory from the U.S. Embassy in Ankara

The U.S. Embassy in Ankara has released an announcement containing detailed safety warnings to raise awareness among its citizens regarding potential earthquake scenarios.

In the information shared via the embassy's official social media accounts, the steps to be taken during and after an earthquake were outlined point by point.

The statement emphasized that those inside a building during a tremor should not panic and attempt to run outside, noting the importance of staying where they are until a safe area is established. It was stated that the 'Drop, Cover, and Hold On' rule is a vital precaution to minimize potential injuries.

The embassy's post is as follows:

"U.S. Citizens: What to do during an earthquake?

If you are indoors during an earthquake:

Stay inside unless you are absolutely certain that it is safe to go outside.

DROP: Get down on your hands and knees to prevent falling.

COVER: Protect your head and neck with your arms.

If possible, get under a sturdy table.

HOLD ON: If you have taken cover under sturdy furniture, hold onto one side of it and be prepared to move with the furniture.

Move as little as possible to avoid injury.

Avoid using elevators.

If you smell gas, leave the area immediately.

If you are outdoors during an earthquake:

Move to an open area away from buildings, power lines, trees, and streetlights.

If you are driving, pull over to a safe location and avoid overpasses and bridges.

Be prepared for aftershocks – DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON during every aftershock.

Follow the instructions issued by local authorities.

Roads may be unusable, which could make access to airports difficult.

Be prepared to shelter in a secure location for several days.

Obtain travel insurance to cover unexpected expenses.
