Earthquake map of the Sea of Marmara to be created: Fault lines will be monitored closely

In a project conducted with Japanese scientists, the Kandilli Observatory has begun analyzing 10 months of data obtained from seismometers placed in the Sea of Marmara. The studies aim to provide detailed information about the locations and magnitudes of potential earthquakes in the region.

Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KRDAE), in collaboration with Japanese scientists, collected seismic data for 10 months using 8 ocean-bottom seismometers (OBS) placed on the seabed of the Sea of Marmara. 

Within this scope, data was recorded from points on the seabed ranging in depth from 145 meters to 1269 meters.

The collected seismic data was retrieved from the sea by the TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Vessel and compiled. The Kandilli Observatory has begun analyzing the movements of the fault line, particularly in the İzmit Bay segment, using this data.

DETAILED INFORMATION ON EARTHQUAKE RISK WILL BE OBTAINED

Director of the Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute Prof. Dr. Nurcan Meral Özel emphasized that such underwater studies are not common in Turkey, but that such research is of great importance in regions with high earthquake risk like the Sea of Marmara.

Özel stated, “We are meticulously continuing our research to better understand the earthquake risk in the Marmara Region, where the potential for seismic activity is high.

FAULT LINE IN THE REGION IS BEING MONITORED CLOSELY

This study, conducted by the Kandilli Observatory, aims to provide clearer data on potential earthquakes in the Sea of Marmara. The data collected from the seismometers will provide the opportunity to analyze fault movements in the region in greater detail and will reveal important information about the magnitudes and potential effects of future earthquakes.
