Prof. Dr. Naci Görür was a guest on the program Yüz Yüze (Face to Face) with Buket Aydın on Haber Global. Görür made significant statements regarding Turkey's earthquake map and drew attention to certain regions.
"IT COULD REACH UP TO 7.4"
Görür's statements are as follows:
"A very significant section from Malatya to Hatay has ruptured. A major earthquake of disaster proportions will not occur in the long term, but there are some graben faults. However, given their age, these are slow-moving faults. We do not expect a major earthquake for 500 years. It takes 500 years for the movement of the East Anatolian Fault to create the stress for an earthquake of magnitude 7 or higher. The unbroken sections of the fault I mentioned also rupture after a while. We call these aftershocks. We will feel earthquakes in that region for about 1-1.5 years. Except for the Bingöl and Karlıova region on the East Anatolian Fault, we are far from major earthquakes. If there are any unbroken places, they will rupture.
We are expecting one between Erzincan and Karlıova. If this fault produces an earthquake, it could reach up to 7.4. It is not far from Tunceli. It is also surrounded by an active fault from the west. The Ovacık fault produces earthquakes by moving slowly. There is the Nazimiye fault just south of Tunceli. It is surrounded by faults on four sides. The Yedisu fault is particularly a cause for concern. It is imminent, there is no joking about it. We cannot speak precisely about the timing. We do not know the recurrence period. Task the MTA (General Directorate of Mineral Research and Exploration) with determining this. The benefit of science and the reason for the existence of a geologist is this."
AN EARTHQUAKE ALSO OCCURRED IN TUNCELİ AT THE SAME TIME
While an earthquake occurred in Tunceli on Tuesday evening, November 28, Naci Görür made his statement that they are expecting a 7.4 magnitude earthquake in Tunceli at the exact same minutes, unaware of the event. Completely independently, Tunceli shook at the same time. The Tunceli earthquake was also felt in Elazığ.
