ECHR sets deadline for Osman Kavala case
The European Court of Human Rights has announced that the Grand Chamber hearing regarding the application of Osman Kavala, who was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment in the Gezi Park trial, will be held on March 25, 2026. A schedule for applications and submissions has also been set to allow Turkey to participate as a party.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has taken a new decision regarding Osman Kavala's application file.
Following the non-implementation of the violation ruling previously issued by the ECHR, Osman Kavala's application was recently referred to the Grand Chamber. The Grand Chamber has scheduled the hearing for the case for March 25, 2026.
DATE SET FOR WRITTEN SUBMISSIONS
The court has requested that the parties submit their written statements and opinions no later than January 26, 2026. Within this timeframe, Turkey must also make the necessary applications to be a party to the hearing.
It was reported that individuals and institutions wishing to intervene in the case must apply to the ECHR by January 29, 2026. If intervention requests are accepted, observations and opinions must be submitted to the court no later than February 12, 2026.
Despite the ECHR's violation ruling dated December 10, 2019, regarding Osman Kavala, his detention continued, and Kavala was sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment as part of the Gezi Park trial. The application file regarding this trial has been moved to the agenda of the ECHR Grand Chamber.
