Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu will face the second hearing today in the case opened following an investigation into remarks he made regarding Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor Akın Gürlek: “We will rip out the mind that governs you from the mind of this nation to save even your own children from these treatments. We will rip it out so that no one shows up at your children's door.”
Imamoğlu was charged with “targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism” and “threatening,” and a lawsuit was filed seeking up to 7 years and 4 months in prison, as well as a political ban. In the first hearing held on April 11, İmamoğlu presented his defense, and the file was sent to the prosecutor to prepare the final opinion on the merits.
In the first hearing, the court panel accepted the request of the victim party to join the case regarding the “threatening” and “insult” charges, while rejecting the request to join regarding the charge of “targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism.” Furthermore, the court did not find the request by İmamoğlu's lawyers to hold the hearings at the Çağlayan Courthouse to be appropriate.
The second hearing of the case will take place today at 10:00 AM in the courtroom at Silivri Prison. Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Özgür Özel will also attend the hearing.
