Aydın Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Özlem Çerçioğlu, who resigned from the CHP and joined the AKP, did not get the result she expected in the first election she entered at her new party.

Çerçioğlu, who was a candidate in the council membership election held at the Union of Municipalities of Turkey, could not make it onto the list during the process in which mayors cast their votes. In the election where 757 mayors from across the country voted, there was intense competition for the 14-person council membership.

Çerçioğlu, who was previously elected to the council from the Republican People's Party quota, could not gather enough votes this time despite being nominated in the first spot on the AKP list.
