Emniyet-Sen publishes: 3 out of 10 police officers consider suicide

The Police Organization Union conducted a survey research with the participation of 15,375 police personnel regarding suicides and problems experienced within the organization. According to the research, while police personnel consider resigning if they had the chance to do another job, 11.20% state that they would apply to “sects or religious communities” when they experience problems.

THEY ARE NOT SATISFIED

According to the survey, to the question "Are you satisfied with being a member of the police organization," 23% of the participating police personnel answered "I am not satisfied at all," 50.3% "I am not satisfied," 3.9% "I am satisfied," and 7.1% "I am very satisfied." The rate of those who remained undecided was 15.7%.

3 OUT OF 10 POLICE OFFICERS CONSIDER SUICIDE

To the question asked in the survey, "Have you ever considered committing suicide?", 64.8% of the police personnel answered 'no', while the rate of those who considered committing suicide was 35.2%.

According to the research, "mobbing (bullying, pressure from superiors)" ranked first with a rate of 99% as the primary cause of suicides among police personnel, and "working hours and duty stress" ranked second with 98.5%.

The survey stated that 74% of police personnel are directly affected by suicides, and 72% suffer from economic problems.

MORE THAN HALF WANT TO RESIGN

While 76.8% of police personnel stated that they would resign if they had the chance to choose another profession, the rate of those who said 'No, I would not resign' was 13.8%. The rate of those who were undecided was announced as 9.5%.

WHO DO THEY APPLY TO WHEN THEY HAVE PROBLEMS?

To the question in the survey, "Where do you apply when you experience a professional problem in the organization?", 52.20% of the participants answered "I share it with influential people or pages on social media", 12% "To influential and powerful people", 11.20% "To sects or religious communities", 7.20% "To political parties or politicians", 4.30% "To superiors or managers", and 3.2% "To justice and judicial authorities". The rate of those who said "I do not make any application" was 9.5%.

THEY TRUST MINISTER YERLIKAYA

To the question, "Are you hopeful about the current Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya regarding the resolution of problems and taking steps on the chronic issues of the Police Organization?", 56.1% of the participants stated that they were 'hopeful', while 43.9% stated that they were 'hopeless'.

In the conclusion section of the survey, the following findings were included in order:

1. A large portion of the Police Organization personnel serve due to economic reasons.

2. The satisfaction rate of the Police Organization personnel with the institution is very low.

3. Long and irregular working hours are the biggest problem encountered during duty.

4. Mobbing during duty is the biggest stress factor.

5. Police Organization personnel are affected by suicide cases at a very high rate. It has been observed that 3 out of every 4 personnel have received news of a suicide of a colleague they knew.

6. 3 out of every 10 personnel have considered the idea of suicide.

7. 7 out of every 10 personnel are considering resigning.

8. 8 out of every 10 personnel stated that they would resign if they had another alternative.

9. 8 out of every 10 personnel do not recommend their profession to their acquaintances.

10. A large portion of the Police Organization personnel see mobbing as the root cause of suicides.

11. 2 out of every 10 personnel give realistic answers in psychological evaluations.

12. A large portion of the Police Organization personnel resort to social media when they experience a problem.

13. 6 out of 10 personnel trust Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya.

14. Police Organization personnel see the right to unionize as the solution to their problems.”
