Prof. Dr. İzzet Özgenç, who served as a legal advisor to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during his tenure as Mayor of Istanbul, has revealed that a former member of parliament, whose name he did not disclose, warned him, saying, "If you do not stop your statements on social media, you will be arrested."

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recited the poem "Divine Army," which includes the lines "Minarets are our bayonets, domes our helmets," in Siirt on December 12, 1997, after which a lawsuit was filed against him and he served four months in prison. Returning to politics after his political ban was lifted, Erdoğan entered parliament as a Siirt MP in the by-elections held on March 9, 2003, and subsequently took the seat of Prime Minister.
One of the figures who provided legal support for Erdoğan 26 years ago was Prof. Dr. İzzet Özgenç.
Prof. Dr. İzzet Özgenç also served as a legal advisor during President Erdoğan's tenure as Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor.
İzzet Özgenç, who argued at the time that Erdoğan had been treated unfairly, has now provided legal support for İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. A prison sentence of up to 4 years and 1 month was requested for İmamoğlu on the grounds that he insulted members of the Supreme Election Council (YSK) following the cancellation of the March 31, 2019 elections. The court sentenced Ekrem İmamoğlu to 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days in prison, along with a temporary political ban.
For this trial in which İmamoğlu was judged, three professors, well-known in the legal world and contributors to the drafting of many laws, prepared a report. The individuals who signed the opinion were Prof. Dr. Adem Sözüer from Istanbul University, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Gökçen from Marmara University, and Prof. Dr. İzzet Özgenç from Ankara University.
Prof. Dr. İzzet Özgenç has also recently been criticizing the AKP government regarding the "judicial crisis" and "judicial problems."
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's former legal advisor during his time as İBB Mayor, Prof. Dr. İzzet Özgenç, announced that a former MP, whose name he did not disclose, warned him, saying, "If you do not stop your statements on social media, you will be arrested."
İzzet Özgenç shared the following message on his social media account: "A former MP, who has a relationship of patronage with BDDK members, warned me in a 'polite' tone when we met at a wedding ceremony at the Ankara Vilayetler Evi on July 13, that I would be ARRESTED if I did not stop the statements I made on this account!"
Here is that message:
BDDK üyeleri ile arasında sahabet ilişkisi bulunan bir ex Milletvekili, 13 Temmuz günü Ankara Vilayetler Evinde bir nikâh programında karşılaştığımızda, “kibar” bir dille, bana işbu hesapta yaptığım açıklamalardan vazgeçmediğim takdirde TUTUKLANACAĞIM “uyarı”sında bulunmuştur!
