Erhan Afyoncu's message on the Pope: 'He arrived on the anniversary of the speech that launched the Crusades: It must be a coincidence'

While Pope Leo XIV's visit to Turkey is being widely debated, many figures continue to share striking posts regarding this visit. While AKP members emphasize how important and valuable the visit is, a striking comment on the visit came from National Defense University Rector Prof. Dr. Erhan Afyoncu.

Afyoncu concluded his post, in which he pointed to historical facts, with the words 'it must be a coincidence'.

"Pope Urban II addressed a large crowd of clergy and laypeople during the Council of Clermont on November 27, 1095. By delivering one of the most influential speeches of the Middle Ages, he called on all Christians in Europe to fight against Muslims to reclaim the Holy Land. 

His speech, which he ended with the cry 'Deus vult!', meaning 'God wills it!', launched the Crusades that would last for 200 years.

As a result of the Crusades, hundreds of thousands of Muslims, Christians, and Jews were massacred.

The states established by the Crusaders in the Middle East were destroyed as a result of the struggle of the Turks that lasted for several centuries. 

Pope Leo XIV, by what must be a coincidence, arrived in our country on November 27, the 930th anniversary of the speech that launched the Crusades."
