Tan, who frequently made harsh criticisms of anti-AKP politicians and journalists on television, had taken a 2-month leave before the March 31, 2019 local elections after addressing Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu as "my son."

Ultimately, he decided to end his tenure at A Haber.

Erkan Tan's statement announcing his resignation was as follows:

“Here at A Haber, when the clock strikes nine, we will no longer be here.

We are handing over the broadcast to our colleagues and taking our leave from your presence. May you be entrusted to God. For nine years, we said goodbye to you like this every morning. I loved A Haber like my own child; the time has come to leave A Haber television, which is my family, my soul, my heart, and my spirit, and I have resigned.

This is a twist of fate. Please grant your blessings to the members of A Haber. I wish you all a healthy and successful life from Almighty God.

I entrust A Haber and you to God. Our side in the future will be the People's Alliance led by Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Our prayers and our love are clear, ‘GIVE THE MEHTER!’ Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilayhi Raji'un; God is our owner, whatever He does is beautiful”
