European Commissioner for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Oliver Varhelyi made a statement ahead of the emergency foreign ministers' meeting convened following Hamas's surprise attack on Israel.

In a post on his X account, Varhelyi stated that the current development aid program amounts to 691 million euros, adding, "All payments suspended, all projects under review, all project budgets including for 2023 postponed until further notice, all programs re-evaluated. The scale of terror and brutality against Israel and its people marks a turning point. It is impossible to carry on as usual" he said.

The European Union was one of the largest financial supporters of the Palestinians.
