Recently, there has been an increase in rejection rates for Schengen visa applications from Turkey. According to data shared by the European Commission, Turkey's visa rejection rate rose from 15.7 percent to 16.1 percent, placing Turkey in second place behind Iran with this figure.
10.3 MILLION APPLICATIONS
According to figures published by the European Commission, consulates of European Union (EU) countries and Schengen member states received more than 10.3 million applications for short-stay visas in 2023.
POST-PANDEMIC DECLINE
In 2022, 7.5 million people had applied for a Schengen visa. In 2023, this number rose to 10.3 million, an increase of 37 percent.
However, the number remained well below the 17 million applications recorded in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic.
8.5 MILLION APPLICATIONS APPROVED
Although the number of visas approved in 2023 increased compared to 2022, it still remained below 2019 data.
In 2023, 8.5 million applications, or 82.3 percent, were approved.
In 2022, 5.9 million visas were issued, and in 2019, 15 million were issued.
TURKEY'S VISA REJECTION RATE INCREASED
Turkey's visa rejection rate rose from 15.7 percent to 16.1 percent in 2023. With this figure, Turkey ranked second after Iran.
Estonia was recorded as the country with the highest rejection rate for applications from Turkey.
The Estonian representation in Ankara rejected 741 out of 1,744 applications. This resulted in a rejection rate of 42.5 percent.

The Czech Consulate in Istanbul rejected 23.5 percent of applications.

The Hungarian representation in Ankara rejected 22.9 percent of applications.
CROATIA
The Croatian Consulate in Istanbul rejected 22.4 percent of applications.
