Move from European mayors for İmamoğlu! 'The EU cannot turn a blind eye to this situation'

Member of the European Parliament, former Mayor of Florence, and President of Eurocities Dario Nardella announced that they will come to Istanbul with European mayors to support the imprisoned Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Nardella said, "European mayors will demand the release of those unjustly imprisoned. The EU cannot turn a blind eye to this situation. Trade agreements should not be made with governments that violate democracy and human rights.”

In a post on his social media account, Nardella included the following statements:

“Six months ago, I embraced my friend Ekrem İmamoğlu in Istanbul. A month later, he was thrown into prison in Silivri, and he is still being held there along with 16 CHP mayors.

European mayors will come to Istanbul next week to show solidarity and demand the release of those unjustly imprisoned.

The EU cannot turn a blind eye to this situation. Trade agreements should not be made with governments that violate democracy and human rights.”
