Expert issues warning... Aegean and Mediterranean on high alert: 'Stress transfer loaded onto the region'

The magnitude 6 earthquake that occurred in the Mediterranean caused panic in Aegean and Mediterranean provinces. Geological Engineer Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş warned that the activity on the Crete Fault could affect the Aegean earthquake cluster. Bektaş stated, "The Aegean earthquake cluster is expanding; caution must be exercised."

Although the epicenter of the earthquake was offshore, the tremors were strongly felt in many Aegean and Mediterranean provinces, primarily Muğla, Antalya, Aydın, İzmir, and Denizli. Citizens, awakened from their sleep at night, poured into the streets in panic.

"WATCH THE AEGEAN EARTHQUAKE CLUSTER"

Geological Engineer Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş issued significant warnings following the tremor in the Mediterranean.

Stating, "Watch the Aegean earthquake cluster," Prof. Dr. Bektaş emphasized that the magnitude 6.0 earthquake on the Crete Fault is creating pressure on fault lines in the Aegean Region. Highlighting the Uşak Fault Block in particular, Bektaş noted that there has been a stress transfer to this region.

STRESS TRANSFER AND CRETE FAULT WARNING

Prof. Dr. Bektaş made the following statements in a post on his social media account:

"The Crete Fault continues to strain the Uşak Fault Block with the M6 earthquake. The stress resulting from the African Plate being pushed under the Anatolian Plate created the M6 earthquake with the Crete Fault and has transferred stress to the northeast, to the Uşak Fault Block, and to the Aegean earthquake zone above it."

EARTHQUAKE CLUSTER IS EXPANDING

Stating that the earthquake cluster in the Aegean is gradually expanding, Bektaş issued the following warnings:

"In the last century, 5 earthquakes with magnitudes between M6-7 have occurred on the Uşak Fault Block. The Aegean earthquake cluster shows a tendency to expand toward İzmir-Manisa in the west, Afyon-Isparta in the east, Kütahya in the north, and Muğla in the south. The Crete M6 earthquake has further increased the probability of this expansion."
