Expert report released in accident where Somali President's son killed a motorcycle courier

In the accident that occurred on November 30 around noon on Kennedy Street in the direction of Zeytinburnu at the Eurasia Tunnel exit, motorcycle driver Yunus Emre Göçer, riding a motorcycle with license plate 16 AFL 804, wanted to slow down and pull over to the side of the road while traveling on the coastal road.

Mohamed Hassan Shekh Mohamud, the son of the Somali President, who was traveling in the same direction in his car with license plate 06 CD 4581, struck the motorcycle from behind. Göçer, who was thrown onto the road by the impact, was seriously injured. Police and medical teams were dispatched to the scene upon notification.

"HE STRUCK FROM BEHIND WITHOUT EVEN BRAKING"

Göçer's friend Yusuf Özsoy said, "Legal processes are ongoing; we will bury our friend today. The traffic police teams who arrived at the scene filed a report without watching any footage, stating that the motorcyclist had lost steering control and then hit the curb and fell in front of the vehicle. In the footage we obtained through our lawyer, it is visible that the car struck our friend from behind without even braking, causing his injury and subsequent death. The person who struck him has not been arrested in any way," he said.

STATEMENT FROM MINISTER TUNÇ

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç responded to a question regarding the death of a courier in the accident involving the Somali President's son.

Responding to journalists' questions, Minister Tunç stated that the nature of the crime had changed, saying, "The necessary judicial procedures will be carried out. Let no one have any doubts. If there is a fault, if there is a crime, it will be followed up. It could be the Somali President's son, or it could be any citizen."

Minister Tunç also stated that the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office would evaluate the situation.

NO ROAD-RELATED FACTORS IN THE ACCIDENT

According to the report by Ali Selim Yamanlı from Sözcü, an expert report has been issued following the incident. The report stated that on the day of the accident, the weather was clear, the road within the residential area was straight, and the road surface was dry. Furthermore, it was stated that there were no road-related issues contributing to the accident, and it was underlined that the maximum speed limit was 80 kilometers per hour.

"HE WAS NOT WEARING A HELMET"

In the expert report, which also included the statement of the Somali President's son, Mohammed Hassan Shekh Mohamud, it was stated that Mohamud claimed the motorcycle driven by Yunus Emre Göçer, which was traveling in front of him, suddenly braked and turned right without signaling, and that he was not wearing a helmet at the time. He further claimed that he pressed his vehicle's brakes as the motorcycle driver stopped and turned toward the curb, but he could not stop and was forced to strike the motorcycle unintentionally, after which the motorcycle driver was thrown and fell. He stated that his vehicle's speed was around 50-55 kilometers per hour at the time, and that he stopped on the side of the road and went to the person's side.

FOUND AT FAULT IN EXPERT REPORT

Following the examination of the accident footage included in the expert report, it was stated that motorcycle courier Yunus Emre Göçer had no violations or faults regarding any article specified in the Highway Traffic Law during the accident. The report emphasized that the party at fault in the accident, which occurred due to a failure to maintain a safe following distance and striking the motorcycle from behind according to the Highway Traffic Law and the Highway Traffic Regulation, was the Somali President's son, Mohammed Hassan Shekh Mohamud.
