In the incident in İzmir where 2 people died after being electrocuted, it was stated that during the construction of three new rainwater grates in the area on January 4, 2024, carried out without informing the GDZ Electricity Distribution Company, the protective materials on the electrical cable—which had been laid in a cable trench at a depth of 45 centimeters in accordance with regulations—were destroyed and stretched, and the cables were moved onto the transition pipes between the grates; this situation was identified and recorded by authorized institutions during an on-site inspection one day after the incident.
"A PORTION OF THE PROTECTIVE PIPE WAS CANCELLED..."
The report prepared as a result of the expert examination commissioned by the prosecutor's office summarized the situation as follows:
"A point that should not be overlooked is that the factor causing such a shallow burial depth at the point where the minimum cable depth dropped to 15 cm is the white drainage pipe passed adjacent to the manhole cover, which caused the cables to rise toward the cover, and the fact that the cable protective pipe was cancelled in this section. We are of the opinion that this situation, which is a result of İZSU practices, is one of the primary causes of the accident."
In the statement made by the GDZ Electricity Distribution Company, it was noted that, "Requests received by our institution regarding the area where the incident occurred over the last 6 months through all channels, including CİMER, the Call Center, and social media, have been examined, but it has been determined that there is no record of any complaints. The complaints that local residents mentioned in their statements as having been reported for a long time were made to other responsible institutions. On the other hand, a fault record regarding a different network element in the region was received on January 9, and the issue was resolved by the teams and the record was closed."
