WARNINGS HAD BEEN ISSUED IN A BBC DOCUMENTARY

A documentary published on BBC Türkçe two days ago had drawn attention to the seismic risks in the region. Experts had emphasized that "the region is one of the youngest fault basins and is located at the intersection point of the North Anatolian and East Anatolian Faults."

THE REGION CARRIES A HIGH RISK

Dr. Kenan Akbayram, Director of the Bingöl University Energy, Environment and Natural Disaster Research Center, stated that the region "is one of the rare areas in the world where very large strike-slip faults intersect."

"A 7.4-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE IS EXPECTED"

According to experts, the region carries a high risk of a major earthquake. Reminding that "the last major earthquake on the Yedisu Fault, one of Bingöl's northern districts neighboring Erzincan, occurred in 1784," Dr. Akbayram stated that "an earthquake with a magnitude between 7.2 and 7.4 could occur within 2030 plus or minus 15 years."

Furthermore, stating that the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes increased the stress in the region, Akbayram expressed that the most stress has accumulated in Bingöl.

AHMET ERCAN'S COMMENT ON THE BINGÖL EARTHQUAKE

On the other hand, Geophysicist Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan issued a warning regarding the 4.8-magnitude earthquake in Bingöl, saying, "It is a sign of stress accumulation. Prepare for the future."
