Renowned historian Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı passed away on March 13 at the hospital where he was receiving treatment. İlber Ortaylı, who left us at the age of 78, is being laid to rest today.

A ceremony was held for the famous historian at Galatasaray University. There was a high level of attendance at the ceremony.

Ortaylı's close friend Fatih Altaylı made statements following the ceremony. Speaking to Sözcü TV, Altaylı said, "I knew deep down that this would be his last year. His health was deteriorating. Despite this, he didn't pay any attention to his health. I used to tell him, 'They will put you on trial for treason.' He would ask, 'Why?' I would say, 'You are a national treasure, and one does not treat a national treasure so poorly.'"

Unable to hold back his tears as he continued his speech, Fatih Altaylı said, "I still find it hard to believe. I still think he will come swaying from over there. Forgive me... I wouldn't be surprised at all if he did."
