AKP member Melih Gökçek shared a video on his social media account of Dilek Kaya İmamoğlu, the wife of the imprisoned presidential candidate and İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, while she was swimming, with the caption, "Guess who this lady enjoying herself in Bodrum is?"
Gökçek's post quickly became a trending topic on social media. While numerous users reacted to the post, Gökçek deleted it following the intense backlash.
HARSH CRITICISM FROM Fatih Altaylı TO GÖKÇEK
Fatih Altaylı, who addressed Gökçek's post in his column, began his piece with the words, "Oh Melih Gökçek, oh." Directly addressing Gökçek, Altaylı wrote, "You are nearing 80 years of age; were you not even a little bit ashamed to cast aspersions on the wife of someone who has been held in prison for over a year! Did your conscience not prick you even a tiny bit!"
Altaylı also addressed Gökçek's wife, Nevin Gökçek, writing, "And you, Nevin Gökçek, at the very least, did you not say to your husband, 'Don't be rude, it's very shameful. Is this behavior becoming of you?'"
Describing Gökçek's post as a "rude act," Altaylı noted that it was deleted following the backlash, stating, "He received so much reaction, so many insults and curses, that he was forced to delete his post."
HE DESCRIBED HIS OWN PERIOD OF IMPRISONMENT
In the remainder of his article, Altaylı shared his assessments regarding the lives of the loved ones of those imprisoned, based on his own experiences with family visits during his time in prison.
Stating that family visits were among the most difficult days in prison for him, Altaylı explained that his wife, daughter, mother, sibling, and close friends had to come to the prison every week to see him.
Altaylı noted that he was particularly saddened by his wife's inability to go on a long vacation during the summer, and shared that he would tell his loved ones, "Please don't come. Go take your vacation, enjoy yourselves. Do not feel like prisoners just because I am inside."
“THE MORE JOYFUL AND HAPPY YOUR LOVED ONES ARE ON THE OUTSIDE...”
Altaylı explained how a person in prison can be affected by the happiness of their loved ones on the outside with these words:
"The more joyful and happy your loved ones are on the outside, the more happy and joyful you are on the inside. If they are traveling, you rejoice as if you were traveling yourself; if they go on vacation, you are as cheerful as if you had gone on vacation yourself."
Following this assessment, Altaylı argued that Dilek İmamoğlu vacationing in Bodrum might carry a different meaning for Ekrem İmamoğlu, stating, "Therefore, if you ask me, his wife swimming has made Ekrem İmamoğlu happy."
At the end of his article, Altaylı continued his criticism of Gökçek, saying, "One day, when true justice comes to Turkey and he is thrown inside, Melih Gökçek will also understand what I mean."
The relevant part of Fatih Altaylı's article titled "Melih Bey, aren't you ashamed!" is as follows:
"Oh Melih Gökçek, oh.
You are nearing 80 years of age; were you not even a little bit ashamed to cast aspersions on the wife of someone who has been held in prison for over a year! Did your conscience not prick you even a tiny bit!
And you, Nevin Gökçek, at the very least, did you not say to your husband, 'Don't be rude, it's very shameful. Is this behavior becoming of you?' Or perhaps he deleted the post because you put him in his place. If so, good for you.
You are likely aware of the 'rude act' committed by the former mayor of Ankara. He published a photo of Dilek İmamoğlu, the wife of the imprisoned İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, while she was swimming, and asked, 'Guess who this lady enjoying herself in Bodrum is?'
He received so much reaction, so many insults and curses, that he was forced to delete his post.
Let me explain to this gentleman the thoughts and feelings of a prisoner on these matters.
He won't understand, but there is no harm in trying.
Those who listened to the daily letters I wrote during my time in prison might remember; my family visit day was Friday, and for me, it was the most difficult day in prison.
On Fridays, my wife, my daughter if she was in Turkey and not at school, my mother, my sibling if they were in Turkey, and three close friends could come to visit me once a week, on Fridays at 9 AM.
It was the day I was most saddened. Of course, it was wonderful to see the people I love most in life, even for an hour, but I felt pangs of conscience for the inconvenience I caused them. They had to adjust their entire weekly schedules for me, and for that one hour on Friday, they had to forgo their travels, vacations, and other business. I was very sad because I was a burden to them.
Especially, my wife feeling obligated to come to me every Friday without being able to go on a long vacation throughout the summer made me very, very sad.
I begged them all, 'Please don't come. Go take your vacation, enjoy yourselves. Do not feel like prisoners just because I am inside.'
Let me say this briefly.
The more joyful and happy your loved ones are on the outside, the more happy and joyful you are on the inside. If they are traveling, you rejoice as if you were traveling yourself; if they go on vacation, you are as cheerful as if you had gone on vacation yourself.
Melih Gökçek might not understand much, but the human condition manifests exactly like this.
The state of mind of the people you love on the outside becomes your state of mind on the inside.
Therefore, if you ask me, his wife swimming has made Ekrem İmamoğlu happy.
One day, when true justice comes to Turkey and he is thrown inside, Melih Gökçek will also understand what I mean.
On that day, if something similar is said about him, we will be the ones to defend his wife, let no one worry!"
