Journalist Fatih Altaylı, who was held in custody for 191 days on charges of 'insulting the President', underwent surgery on March 17 due to a brain tumor.
AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called Fatih Altaylı after he was discharged from the hospital to convey his get-well wishes.
During a program he attended, Fatih Altaylı responded to the question, "How did you feel when Tayyip Erdoğan called you?"
Altaylı stated the following:
"To be honest, I was surprised. I think not just me, but everyone must have been surprised. I have known Mr. Tayyip for over 30 years. When we first met, he was considered young and I was considered young as well. We have come together many times, done many programs and trips.
Even if he doesn't like me, it's a human gesture. When he learned that someone he had met so many times had undergone brain surgery—and Özay Şendir, whom I used to work with, was there with him—he asked about me. When he learned I had brain surgery, he said, 'Call and let's wish him a speedy recovery.'"
