Fatih Altaylı's much-discussed commentary on Abdulkadir Selvi! 'Treated like a mine donkey...'
Hürriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi became a target for both the Palace and the AKP after writing that Gezi Park trial detainees and Osman Kavala could be retried. Journalist Fatih Altaylı, stating that Selvi is being treated like a 'mine donkey,' said, "They seem to be measuring the reactions from inside and outside through him. That's why they are slapping Selvi from left and right. It's Selvi who ends up suffering. The 'tall cypress' (Selvi) might soon be toppled," he remarked.

Hürriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi, known for his proximity to the government, wrote in an article penned before the meeting between AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and CHP Chairman Özgür Özel that a retrial could be held for Gezi Park trial convicts and Osman Kavala.
Selvi's article, titled "The Kavala file that will leave its mark on the Erdoğan-Özel meeting," drew harsh reactions from one of Erdoğan's chief advisors, Ahmet Selim Köroğlu, and AKP member Mücahit Birinci.
Evaluating the agenda on his own YouTube channel, journalist Fatih Altaylı made highly discussed remarks about Selvi.
'MINE DONKEY' ANALOGY
Drawing attention to the articles Selvi has written recently, Altaylı stated that Selvi is being used like a 'mine donkey.'
Stating that the AKP has recently been treating Selvi like a 'whipping boy,' Altaylı used the following expressions:
“They have started treating Abdülkadir Selvi a bit like a whipping boy, or rather, like a mine donkey. Forgive my phrasing; I am using this as an analogy. I say this from this perspective: They are driving Abdülkadir Selvi into minefields, and it seems to me that they are measuring the reactions there through him. The reactions from both outside and inside...
"THEY ARE SLAPPING SELVI FROM LEFT AND RIGHT"
Why do I say this? Abdülkadir Selvi has clearly started writing, one after another, about subjects he would never dare to speak about, mention, or express without talking to the Palace, in the way he was prompted during plane trips. However, both the leader or spokespeople of the coalition partner Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and certain figures within the AK Party are slapping Selvi from left and right.
"WHICH ONE REPRESENTS THE AK PARTY?"
Yesterday, for instance, Mücahit Birinci made a harsh statement regarding this Kavala issue, saying that Abdülkadir Selvi had overstepped his bounds and was talking nonsense. Now, who represents the AK Party more: Mücahit Birinci or Selvi? Things are getting a bit confusing there. Because on one hand, there is a situation where he acts as the 'Abdülkadir who does what is necessary.'
"THE TALL CYPRESS MIGHT BE TOPPLED"
On the other hand, there is the situation of being slapped by the ruling partners, both by the AK Party and the MHP; it is not very possible to understand this situation. It is Selvi who ends up suffering. The 'tall cypress' (Selvi) might soon be toppled.”
