Sharing his views on family structure during the program, Memişoğlu stated that children are at the foundation of the family concept, saying, "I think the family structure is very important. The foundation of a society is the family. If you don't have children, you are just a husband and wife; you cannot be a family."
Sözcü TV main news anchor Fatih Portakal reacted very sharply to Minister Memişoğlu during the live broadcast.
"DO YOUR JOB AND STAY OUT OF THE NATION'S BEDROOM"
"Why would a health minister say this? Why does he say it without forming proper sentences? One should ask him that. He says our population is decreasing, we need children, families should have children.
This year is the year of the family. But he has a sentence like this: 'If you don't have children, you are just a husband and wife; you cannot be a family.' This is probably the only thing that needs to be written. How insolent."
"We are talking about such a shallow mentality. He might be successful in the field of medicine, but he is shallow himself. Mr. Kemal, you are not aware that you are upsetting people. What insolence, what tactlessness. You cannot even do your own job properly.
You cannot protect newborn babies. You are still sitting in that seat. Then you try to give me advice. Keep your advice to yourself. Don't give me advice. You solve the problems related to health. People are getting appointments for the year 2027. You solve these first, then talk about whatever you want to talk about. And don't get into people's bedroom conversations or anything like that. It's shameful, very shameful."
