The 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the Sea of Marmara caused great panic in the city; transportation came to a standstill, communication problems were experienced, and the scarcity of assembly areas drew attention.

Sözcü TV Main News Anchor Fatih Portakal also made a striking comment about the process.

Touching on the communication and traffic problems experienced after the earthquake, Portakal assessed, "In Japan, they say 'do not leave your home,' while here, they tell us 'do not enter your home.' It is not the earthquake that kills, but negligence. I am struggling to keep myself from fuming."

Directing harsh criticisms at the government, officials, and the system, Portakal said, "God forbid, we did not experience a major disaster. But we live within such a reality. The city did not function. I saw this with my own eyes. I will not deny what I saw."

Portakal continued as follows:

"And of course, people are inevitably afraid to enter their homes. Just think, when an earthquake happens in Japan, they say 'do not leave your home.' Our officials, when an earthquake happens, say 'go to safe places' if you do not trust your building. And people continue to live on edge..."

Let me ask, and you answer: Do you trust the building you live in? We are on fault lines. Our building stock and the lack of oversight in the country are clear. The mentality in the country is also clear: like the example of Hatay, like in Kahramanmaraş...

You know the promises made in Hatay on February 6, 2023, and the sentences that came out of the mouths of those who govern us. They are being repeated anyway. It is obvious that nothing has been done in the two years that have passed. Look, I say nothing. If it had been done, the city would not have been paralyzed by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake.

I am struggling to keep myself from fuming. I am struggling to keep myself from fuming on this screen."
