Fine for AKP mayor who caused 1 death! He will pay in 12 installments!

İsmet Çetinkaya, the AKP mayor of the Akıncılar town in Adıyaman, caused a fatal traffic accident. Initially sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison, Çetinkaya had his sentence commuted to a judicial fine of 48,600 TL by an appellate court decision. On December 7, 2022, at 13:30, traffic teams were notified that a fatal traffic accident had occurred in Aksaray. Upon arriving at the scene, the teams discovered that İsmet Çetinkaya, the AKP mayor of the Akıncılar town in Adıyaman, had caused the accident.


According to the report by İsmail Arı from BirGün, Çetinkaya rear-ended the vehicle driven by Şammas Çağlayan. The car was dragged for approximately 150 meters before overturning. While the driver, Şammas Çağlayan, lost his life in the accident, his relatives in the vehicle, Şaban Çağlayan and Kasım Çağlayan, were injured.

RELEASED AFTER 1 MONTH

One day later, on December 8, 2022, the AKP mayor Çetinkaya was arrested and sent to prison. Just one month later, he was released by the decision of the Aksaray 2nd High Criminal Court. In the trial held at the Aksaray 1st High Criminal Court, Çetinkaya was tried for the crime of “causing death and injury by negligence.”


THEY WITHDREW THEIR COMPLAINTS

It is alleged that prominent figures from the ruling party and certain individuals within the judiciary intervened on behalf of the AKP mayor. The injured parties, Şaban Çağlayan and Kasım Çağlayan, as well as Ümmügülsüm Çağlayan, the wife of the deceased Şammas Çağlayan, who had previously stated they were complainants, said, “Our damages have been covered by İsmet Çetinkaya, and we are withdrawing our complaint.”


The verdict was announced on January 16, 2024. AKP member İsmet Çetinkaya was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison for the crime of “causing the death of one person by negligence.”


The decision was appealed, and the 3rd Criminal Chamber of the Konya Regional Court of Justice commuted the 3-year-and-4-month prison sentence to a judicial fine of 48,600 TL on March 5, 2024. It was decided that Çetinkaya would pay this fine in 12 installments.
