The Social Security Institution (SSI), through a general directive sent to all its units on July 14, sent SMS messages to 9 million people who are personally responsible for paying premiums under the General Health Insurance (GSS) scheme.

Instructions were issued to ensure that the premium debts of those with overdue payments between January 1, 2014, and December 31, 2023, are transferred to enforcement services for follow-up and collection in accordance with the provisions of Law No. 6183, to prevent these debts from becoming time-barred and impossible to track.

Many citizens were shocked to find that enforcement proceedings had been initiated against them while checking their debts following the SMS notifications.

Many citizens expressed their reactions to the practice on social media.

IT WAS ALSO APPLIED TO MUNICIPALITIES

Minister of Labor and Social Security Vedat Işıkhan had announced that the total premium debt of municipalities across Turkey to the SSI amounted to 96 billion liras.

Opposition municipalities, meanwhile, had reacted to these statements, asserting that the majority of the debts were inherited from the AKP era.
