First NSC meeting of the year today: What topics are on the table?

The first National Security Council meeting of 2026 will be held at the Palace today. The agenda focuses on the latest developments in Syria, as well as regional issues concerning Turkey's internal and external security.

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will preside over the first National Security Council (NSC) meeting of the year, which will be held at the Palace. At the summit, topics closely concerning Turkey's security policies will be comprehensively discussed.

SYRIA DOSSIER AT THE CENTER OF THE AGENDA

Syria is expected to be the main agenda item of the meeting. Developments on the ground following the “Ceasefire and Full Integration Agreement” signed on January 18 between the Damascus administration under HTS control and the SDF, the Syrian branch of the terrorist organization PKK, will be evaluated in detail. Additional security measures planned to be taken in areas near the Turkish border and potential requests for support from the Damascus administration will also be addressed.

REGIONAL DEVELOPMENTS AND THE GAZA ISSUE

The general situation in the Middle East will also be discussed at the NSC. Diplomatic initiatives and international contacts regarding the reconstruction of Gaza will be on the agenda of the council members.

IRAN-US TENSION ON THE TABLE

The rising tension between Washington and Tehran following the anti-regime protests in Iran is also among the issues to be addressed at the meeting. It is expected that assessments will be made regarding these developments, which could have an impact on Turkey's regional security.
