The Ministry of Interior announced that Van Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Abdullah Zeydan has been removed from office and that Van Governor Ozan Balcı has been appointed as the Deputy Mayor.

The first reaction from the CHP against the removal of Zeydan and the appointment of a trustee in his place came from Gökhan Günaydın, Deputy Chairman of the CHP Parliamentary Group.

Gökhan Günaydın's statement is as follows:

"Van has now joined the trustee process.. The reason for the Mayor's removal is; 'assisting without being a member..'

Let's assume there is no issue with a fair trial. Why don't you hold an election among the municipal council members to replace the removed Mayor?

The most fundamental principle of law is that crimes and punishments are personal. Despite this, relying on the State of Emergency (OHAL) law, you accept all council members as guilty in advance and bring in an appointed Governor to the mayoralty.

This is primarily a usurpation of the will of the people of Van. Furthermore, you are ignoring the legislative proposal, which was submitted with the consensus of 11 of the 15 political parties represented in Parliament and which aims to bring the administrative guardianship regulation onto a democratic ground.

In fact, what you are trying to ignore as a whole is democracy and the law. We must state that the attitude of the People's Alliance (Cumhur İttifakı) is not a surprise.

What is important is the common stance and roadmap of the democratic forces and the opposition. The future of the country will be determined by the consciousness and determination in this area."
