First statement from Ahmet Ercan following the earthquake in Erzincan! Will there be a larger earthquake in the region?

While the 4.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Kemah district of Erzincan caused brief panic, Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan stated that the tremor was a release of tension on the North Anatolian Fault and emphasized that it is not a precursor to a larger earthquake.

According to data from AFAD, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in Erzincan yesterday at 14:16. The earthquake, with its epicenter in the Kemah district, was recorded at a depth of 4.52 kilometers.

Following the earthquake, which caused brief panic, eyes turned to expert figures. Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan made assessments regarding the 4.9-magnitude earthquake in Erzincan.

Here is the post Ercan shared on his social media account:

“A small earthquake with a magnitude of M4.9 occurred in Hakbilir, located in the Kemah district of Erzincan, on February 6, 2026, at 14:16.

According to geophysical data, the earthquake occurred as a release of tension on the North Anatolian Fault at a focal depth of 3.1 kilometers below the surface.

Based on the quality of construction around Kemah, an earthquake of this magnitude does not cause damage, except to village roofs and masonry stone village houses.

It is not a precursor to a larger earthquake.

The region will continue to be stressed by thrust forces coming from the east.

In the Kemah section, the destructive threshold value for an earthquake begins after M6.3.

The solution is a solid structure on solid ground.

The solution is a Ground-Structure safety certificate.

Survival from earthquakes depends on a strong economy.

Do not forget the 1939 M7.9 Erzincan earthquake, where 40,000 people died by freezing, burning, or remaining under rubble on a cold winter day.

A strong economy is provided by strong administrations.”
