Floods hit Rize and Trabzon: Airport flooded, disaster captured from the air

Heavy rainfall in Rize and Trabzon has caused floods, inundations, and landslides, disrupting transportation in the cities. In Rize's İyidere district, damage occurred in 9 neighborhoods and 7 villages, leading to the evacuation of 7 homes; the aftermath of the flood in the district center was captured from the air. In Trabzon, roads turned into lakes, the arrivals terminal of the airport was submerged, and two buildings were evacuated in Yalıncak following the collapse of a retaining wall.

Heavy rainfall in Rize and Trabzon has caused floods, inundations, and landslides, while also leading to disruptions in transportation.

In Rize's İyidere district, damage occurred in 9 neighborhoods and 7 villages, and 7 homes were evacuated as a precaution. In Trabzon, teams are continuing their work in the field following the rainfall.

7 HOMES EVACUATED IN İYİDERE

The heavy rainfall, which intensified in Rize yesterday evening, continued throughout the night across the city. In the İyidere district, some roads collapsed, and landslides and floods occurred. Landslides also took place in tea plantations.

While there were disruptions in transportation on the section of the Black Sea Coastal Road between the İyidere and Of districts due to flooding, some vehicles remained stranded in the water.

İyidere Mayor Saffet Mete stated that it is estimated that over 150 kilograms of rainfall per square meter fell in the district, noting that damage occurred in 9 neighborhoods and 7 villages, no loss of life was reported, and 7 homes were evacuated as a precaution. It was stated that the overflowing of two streams in the district center also caused the flooding.

AFTERMATH OF THE FLOOD CAPTURED FROM THE AIR

Following the heavy rainfall, a large part of the İyidere district center was covered in muddy water. As stream waters coming from the mountains could not reach the sea, and due to the effect of the downpour, water puddles formed on roads and in some residential areas.

With the receding of the floodwaters, mud and silt remained in the district center. While municipal teams began cleaning efforts, Highway teams also carried out water drainage and road cleaning on the Black Sea Coastal Road.

Some sections of the Black Sea Coastal Road passing through the İyidere and Pazar districts also turned into lakes due to the flooding. Teams are continuing their work in the region.

TEAMS IN THE FIELD IN RIZE

DSİ (State Hydraulic Works), Highway, and municipal teams are working to clear blocked routes and return transportation to normal following the floods and landslides.

The Rize Governor's Office also warned citizens to be careful as the rainfall continues. It was requested that people avoid traffic unless necessary and stay away from areas at risk of floods, inundations, and landslides, as well as stream beds.

ROADS TURNED INTO LAKES IN TRABZON

The heavy rainfall, which intensified in the evening hours in Trabzon, negatively affected transportation and daily life throughout the city. While water puddles formed on the coastal route, some intersections, and streets, drivers had difficulty moving in traffic.

While floods occurred in some regions, especially in Çukurçayır and Yomra, power outages occurred in some points due to the rainfall.

FLOODING AT TRABZON AIRPORT

Trabzon Airport was also affected by the heavy rainfall. Flooding occurred in the arrivals terminal, and teams began work to drain the water.


It was reported that approximately 50 kilograms of rainfall per square meter fell in Trabzon between midnight and 03:00, and 114 reports were received by the 112 Emergency Call Center.


Due to the rainfall, water flowed from retaining walls, and damage occurred to roads, vehicles, and some buildings. It was stated that soil from agricultural and forest areas, as well as parks and gardens, was also carried away by floodwaters. The Green Palace Hotel was also affected by the flooding.

TWO BUILDINGS EVACUATED IN YALINCAK

In the Yalıncak neighborhood of the Ortahisar district, a collapse occurred in the retaining wall of a housing complex and on the road due to the heavy rainfall.

Due to the collapse, citizens living in two buildings within the complex were evacuated by AFAD teams. Security measures were taken in the region.

Under the coordination of the Trabzon Governor's Office, teams from AFAD, Highways, DSİ, Trabzon Metropolitan Municipality, UMKE, TİSKİ, the fire department, and district municipalities are carrying out work in the field.

RAINFALL EXPECTED TO CONTINUE

According to the latest assessments by the Meteorology Department, heavy rainfall is expected to continue in some parts of Trabzon. It was stated that an additional 50 kilograms of rainfall per square meter could fall in some eastern districts, and a new rainy system coming from the west could also be effective in the western districts and Ortahisar.

The Governor's Office requested that citizens not go out in traffic with their private vehicles unless necessary and stay away from areas at risk of floods, inundations, and landslides, as well as stream beds.
