Foreign Minister Fidan calls for comprehensive reform

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan continues his contacts in New York, USA. Minister Fidan addressed participants at the "Summit of the Future" held at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters. Pointing out that the international community and the United Nations are undergoing a historical test, Minister Fidan emphasized the need for a more effective and inclusive structure to solve current global problems. Stating that inequalities in income distribution are deepening and the ability to produce solutions to crises is gradually diminishing, Minister Fidan said, "Global inequality and injustice are paving the way for extremism. Islamophobia and xenophobia are gaining strength in this fertile ground."

Expressing that imbalances are increasing in every field in the world, Fidan stated that the United Nations has not been able to sufficiently fulfill its leadership role in the face of these threats. Minister Fidan drew attention to the need for an effective structure that will produce common solutions to global problems and ensure justice and peace. Minister Fidan stated, "We see very clearly that we need a fairer, more inclusive, and more effective multilateral model."

FİDAN HIGHLIGHTS INCREASING POLARIZATION

Emphasizing that it is evident that comprehensive reform is needed within the United Nations, particularly in the UN Security Council, Minister Fidan stated that the current system needs to be democratized with the phrase "The world is bigger than five." Minister Fidan pointed out that resolutions adopted by an overwhelming majority in the UN General Assembly cannot be implemented due to the Security Council. Expressing that dialogue should be strengthened and the international financial architecture should be renewed in the face of increasing polarization, Minister Fidan said that achieving sustainable development goals could be possible in this way.

Touching on the importance of adapting to new technologies such as digitalization and artificial intelligence, Minister Fidan stated that they attach great importance to the adoption of the "Global Digital Compact," which is one of the fundamental elements of the "Pact for the Future." Fidan said that more support should be given to the United Nations Technology Bank to close the digital divide between developed and least developed countries.

Minister Fidan said, "The success of this summit is a test of our determination to rebuild trust in the multilateral system. The 'Pact for the Future' will guide us on this path and shape our common commitments regarding our vision for the world."
