A fire broke out in agricultural land in the Kepez town of Çanakkale's central district today at around 13:30. The fire, which started for an as-yet-undetermined reason, grew quickly due to strong winds and spread to a forested area.
INTENSIVE AERIAL AND GROUND INTERVENTION
Following reports of the fire, numerous water tenders, fire trucks, and forestry workers affiliated with the Çanakkale Regional Directorate of Forestry were dispatched to the region. Aircraft are also participating in the intervention, and an intensive effort is underway from both the air and the ground to bring the flames under control.
FLAMES THREATEN RESIDENTIAL AREAS
As the wind changed direction, the flames began to approach residential areas. Due to the risk of the fire spreading, Çanakkale Governor Ömer Toraman made a statement on his social media account. Toraman stated, "The forest fire in central Çanakkale is advancing rapidly due to the wind. The fire is being intervened in from the air and the ground. As a precaution, the evacuation of our citizens in the Güzelyalı region has begun. It is important that our citizens do not take to the roads unless necessary."
1 VILLAGE EVACUATED
Evacuation procedures have been initiated in the Güzelyalı village, which is under threat from the fire. Citizens in the region have been directed to safe areas. Authorities warned local residents to be careful and not to obstruct firefighting efforts.
EFFORTS TO BRING UNDER CONTROL CONTINUE
While teams are making intense efforts to prevent the fire from spreading further, it was reported that difficulties are being experienced from time to time in extinguishing efforts due to the wind. Authorities stated that the risk of fire continues due to high temperatures and strong winds throughout the day.
