Former AKP deputy Emin Şirin was a guest on the program Türkiye'nin Sözü, which airs on Sözcü TV.
Evaluating the current agenda, Şirin stated that the AKP is in a state of panic and used the words, "The thing the Palace fears most right now is an early general election. That is why I find the CHP's early election policy very appropriate."
In his statement, Emin Şirin noted that the current Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) lacks the political legitimacy to draft a constitution, emphasizing that the possibility of an early election is the greatest fear for the ruling power.
"THIS PARLIAMENT HAS NO POLITICAL RIGHT TO DRAFT A CONSTITUTION"
Emin Şirin said, “There are 590 deputies in Parliament right now, but how many of them are keeping their oaths? There is a serious moral and representation problem. Legally, this Parliament can draft a constitution, but politically it has no such right. This Parliament cannot create a new social contract without being renewed.”
"THE PUBLIC DID NOT VOTE FOR A CONSTITUTION, THE AGENDA WAS THE ECONOMY"
Stating that the current Parliament did not receive this mandate from the public, Şirin said, “It has been about two years since the general elections. At that time, the economy was discussed, not the constitution. The voters did not vote for a constitutional amendment. Now, attempting to draft a new constitution with a mandate not received from the public lacks political legitimacy.”
"WILL THE NEW CONSTITUTION BE DRAFTED WITH CHIEF NEGOTIATOR ÖCALAN?"
Addressing the claims circulating in the public sphere regarding the new constitution debates, Şirin said, “Today, there is talk that ‘Öcalan will be the chief negotiator.’ Kandil says it will lay down arms, but at the same time, they express that they will not compromise on their political lines. They say, ‘We will continue the struggle not as the PKK, but under another name.’ A new constitution cannot be discussed within this picture.”
"THE PALACE'S GREATEST FEAR IS AN EARLY GENERAL ELECTION"
Reminding that the People's Alliance's vote share declined after the local elections, Şirin said, “The thing the Palace fears most right now is an early general election. I find it very correct for the CHP to bring this issue to the agenda. The local election results are an indicator. The People's Alliance's vote has fallen to 40%. With this vote share, it would be difficult to secure even 230 deputies, let alone 320. They would lose at least 80-90 seats.”
"DEPUTIES WITH NO PUBLIC SUPPORT ARE IN PARLIAMENT"
Arguing that there are many names in Parliament who have no support among the public, Şirin assessed, “There are 20-30-40 deputies in today's Parliament who have no support among the voters. These individuals know themselves that they will not be able to be re-elected. Therefore, it is impossible for this Parliament to draft a constitution without reflecting the true will of the people.”
