Former Çatalca Mufti Ahmet Mehmetalioğlu had previously used the phrase "he croaked on stage" on his social media account after artist Volkan Konak fell ill and passed away during a concert in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Despite facing significant public backlash for these remarks and an investigation launched by the Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), Mehmetalioğlu was appointed as a preacher in Kocaeli.
CHP leader Özgür Özel had reacted sharply to Mehmetalioğlu's statements at rallies, calling on AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and stating that the mufti should be dismissed. Expressing his reaction, Özel had said, "Nothing is being done against someone who says 'he croaked' about an artist like Volkan Konak."
MEHMETALİOĞLU'S LATEST STATEMENTS
In his latest social media post, Ahmet Mehmetalioğlu used harsh language toward Özgür Özel, threatening the CHP leader by saying, "It is easy to throw insults from behind a shield of protection. Come to Fatih without your army of bodyguards, if you dare. You haven't been slapped yet. I will be the one to slap you, just wait."
Regarding his appointment as a preacher in Kocaeli, Mehmetalioğlu had also made a statement on his social media account, saying, "If a war has been entered, we will pay the price, alhamdulillah. If the Lord has permitted this appointment, it means greater good will come of it."
