Former Justice Minister Bozdağ: It is Erdoğan's constitutional right to be a candidate for a third time

Bozdağ evaluated the "this is my last election" remarks made by AKP Chairman and President Erdoğan on his social media account.

Pointing to an early election and evaluating Erdoğan's "this is my last election" words, Bozdağ stated, "In the event that elections are renewed, it is Erdoğan's constitutional right to be a candidate for a third time."

Bekir Bozdağ stated in his post on his X account that if a decision for an early election is taken, Erdoğan could be a presidential candidate for a third time. Bozdağ's statement is as follows:

"This election, as our President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has also expressed, is his last election.

Because according to the Constitution, 'The term of office of the President is five years. A person may be elected President for at most two terms.'

However, again according to the Constitution, 'If the Assembly decides to renew the elections during the second term of the President, the President may be a candidate one more time.' (Constitution, 116/3)

According to this provision of the Constitution, in the event that the TBMM decides to renew the elections, it is our President Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's constitutional right to be a presidential candidate for a third time.

What tomorrow brings is unknown. Perhaps when the time comes, the TBMM may decide to renew the elections and open the way for our President to be a candidate again. Let tomorrow come, and let it be for the best.
