The call for a new constitution by Mehmet Uçum, the architect of the Presidential Government System and Deputy Chairman of the Presidential Legal Policies Board, has sparked public debate regarding 'Erdoğan's 3rd term candidacy'.

Regarding the issue, Mehmet Uçum responded to 12punto columnist Doğan Satmış's article titled "Why does the Palace want a constitutional amendment?" with the words: "A very important point is being overlooked. There is no need for a new constitution for a third term anyway. If the TBMM decides to renew the elections with 360 deputies in early 2028, then the exceptional candidacy comes into play, and President Erdoğan would have the right to be a candidate for a third and final time."

Former YARSAV President Ömer Faruk Eminağaoğlu evaluated Mehmet Uçum's statements.

Speaking to 12punto, Eminağaoğlu stated, "This is unconstitutional, but the latest YSK decision produced this result. This result produced by the YSK is unconstitutional. According to the latest YSK decision, he can be elected, but the YSK decision was taken in violation of the law."

THE ARREST OF TOLGA ŞARDAN

Speaking about the debates in the judiciary and the arrest of journalist Tolga Şardan, Eminağaoğlu said, "These are the results created by a judiciary that is not completely independent. A press that is not free is always the picture that governments want. What Şardan did is entirely journalistic activity. It is never a crime. When there is no independent judiciary, it is seen as a crime in this way. The conditions for an independent judiciary and a free press to operate have disappeared."
