Former YÖK President evaluates the 'diploma investigation' opened against İmamoğlu: 'It has no relevance'

The diploma investigation opened against İmamoğlu by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office continues to be a subject of public debate.

İmamoğlu's lawyer Mehmet Pehlivan and Criminal Law Professor Dr. Adem Sözüer responded to the diploma allegations with documents.

İmamoğlu will provide his statement to the prosecutor's office on February 26 regarding the crime of "forgery of official documents."

Speaking about the diploma investigation opened against Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, former YÖK President Kemal Gürüz said,

"I do not see any problem with İmamoğlu's lateral transfer or equivalency. There cannot be a problem. The matter has nothing to do with YÖK either. Universities are entirely responsible for lateral transfers. The great Istanbul University has its boards and its rules. Everything is done clearly and transparently. It is not done in secret. There is no problem there."

Speaking to Hilal Köylü at Serbestiyet, Gürüz, who served as YÖK President between 1995 and 2003, made statements regarding Ekrem İmamoğlu's diploma investigation.

Gürüz stated that there was no error in İmamoğlu's lateral transfer procedure. Emphasizing that universities are responsible for their own legal identities regarding lateral transfers, Gürüz noted that there were thousands of precedents for this lateral transfer, which took place according to YÖK regulations, during those years.
