Foundations close to AKP call for operation in Syria
As clashes reignite in Syria following the seizure of Aleppo by jihadist groups, debates over border security for Turkey and a potential operation in the Tel Rifaat region have gained momentum. The SETA foundation, known for its proximity to the AKP, has called for an operation, arguing that the new dynamics on the ground present an opportunity for Turkey.

The attacks launched by jihadist groups in Syria have brought intense fighting back to the region after years of relative calm. The groups, which have taken control of Aleppo, continue their advance in the area. These developments have led to a repositioning of the balance of power in the country.
Russia, one of the biggest supporters of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, has been slow to intervene in the jihadist attacks while focusing on the war in Ukraine. Meanwhile, Shiite groups such as Iran and Hezbollah are weakened due to intense Israeli attacks.
During this process, some circles in Turkey have begun sharing maps showing Aleppo within Turkey's borders. On the other hand, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan is intensifying his telephone diplomacy and continuing his contacts regarding the situation in the region.
CALLS FOR OPERATION IN TEL RIFAAT
The SETA Foundation, known for its proximity to the AKP, argued in a report published on the clashes in Syria that Turkey should conduct an operation in the Tel Rifaat region. SETA Foreign Policy Researcher Can Acun stated that this move would both ensure Turkey's border security and increase pressure on Aleppo:
"Turkey should revise its military and political position based on the new reality on the ground. An operation towards Tel Rifaat will serve national security by eliminating the PKK presence. It could also create effects that would strengthen the northern front of Aleppo."
'US IS NOT INVOLVED, CONDITIONS ARE SUITABLE'
OMRAN Turkish Studies Director Ömer Özkizilcik also argued that the ground is set for an operation in Tel Rifaat, noting the following:
"The US does not recognize the YPG presence in Tel Rifaat and is not interested in the region. Russia, Iran, and the Assad regime are not in a position to prevent such an operation. Clearing Tel Rifaat of terrorism will mean the completion of Aleppo's northern front. This development could also pave the way for the return of over 1 million refugees from Turkey."
