Following the 5.1 and 4.5 magnitude earthquakes that occurred off the coast of the Mudanya district of Bursa, the possible Istanbul earthquake has returned to the agenda.
According to experts, while an earthquake with a magnitude between 7 and 7.5 is expected in the Sea of Marmara, the number of risky residential buildings in the city reaches approximately 1.3 million.
3 MILLION PEOPLE UNDER THREAT
Murat Yün, Head of the Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Improvement Department of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB), pointed out in an interview with DW Turkish that a population of 3 million lives in structures expected to sustain heavy damage or collapse in a possible earthquake.
"THE PROBABILITY OF AN EARTHQUAKE AT ANY MOMENT IS 47 PERCENT"
Speaking to DW Turkish, geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür states that the earthquake that occurred off the coast of Mudanya took place on the southern branch of the North Anatolian Fault Line. The major Marmara earthquake, however, is expected on the northern branch of the same fault line. Emphasizing that the predictions regarding this earthquake are still valid, according to Görür, the probability of an earthquake occurring in Istanbul at any moment has risen to 47 percent. Görür used the expressions, "This is an incredible rate. You are almost flipping a coin."
