78 citizens lost their lives in the fire that broke out at the Grand Kartal Hotel, located in the Bolu Kartalkaya Ski Center.
11 people have been detained as part of the investigation launched into the tragedy. Among those detained was Deputy Mayor of Bolu, Sedat Gülener.
As the 'responsibility' debate between the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Bolu Municipality continues regarding the gross negligence that led to the loss of 78 lives, former AKP deputy Şamil Tayyar made striking statements.
“THE MAYOR OF BOLU CANNOT EVEN SEAL A GROCERY STORE THERE”
Speaking on TGRT Haber, Tayyar made a notable statement regarding 'inspections'.
Stating, "This hotel is not within the borders of the Bolu Municipality," Tayyar said, "A provincial mayor acts within their own borders. The location of this hotel is inside a village outside those borders. That village is within the borders of the provincial special administration. The Mayor of Bolu cannot even seal a grocery store there. They do not have such authority to seal."
Tayyar continued as follows:
“THE INSPECTION OF TOURISM-CERTIFIED BUSINESSES BELONGS TO THE MINISTRY”
“But if this were a metropolitan municipality, the Mayor of Bolu could have taken action very easily. The inspection of tourism-certified businesses belongs to the Ministry of Tourism. The Ministry of Tourism can exercise this authority through relevant units.
For example, if there is a need regarding a fire inspection, they can request it from the Bolu Municipality. Municipalities can only issue construction and building permits. Since this hotel is outside municipal borders, the provincial special administration issued the permit."
