New confessions have emerged in the 'Newborn Gang' trial, one of the most chilling scandals in Turkey. On the second day of the hearing, defendant nurse Hakan Doğukan Taşçı revealed that the gang's ringleader, Fırat Sarı, received 10,000 liras from hospital administrators for every baby transferred. In his statement yesterday, Fırat Sarı claimed his monthly income was 400,000 liras. However, Taşçı's testimony revealed that Sarı's income was significantly higher than 400,000.

Nurse Hakan Doğukan Taşçı, who gave the first defense at the hearing, said, "I will present my defense. First of all, after I was arrested, I stated the actions I took myself and admitted to them. I gave my statements with honesty during the investigation phase.
I do not accept the accusations on some issues. I do not accept the charge of intentional killing. The expert report was written only based on phone wiretaps. I graduated from a health vocational high school in 2014.
I have been working in neonatal intensive care for 10 years.
I have worked in 7-8 hospitals. Since we are all in the healthcare sector, we all know the other defendants. I know most of them. I know Fırat Sarı from Reyap Hospital.
Hasan Basri is my friend. Our case consists of many actions. There are many accusations. There are some systematic irregularities," he had said.
"FIRAT WAS APPLYING PRESSURE"
When asked about the voice recording with Fırat Sarı, nurse Hakan Doğukan Taşçı replied, "Every hospital owner wants to make money. They apply pressure on Fırat Sarı to keep patient numbers high. Fırat then conveys this to me."
Taşçı also stated that Fırat Sarı quoted higher fees to patients and kept the commission for himself.
"THE MORE FULL THE INTENSIVE CARE UNIT IS, THE MORE MONEY IS EARNED"
Stating that Fırat Sarı would complain when the intensive care unit was empty and demand it be filled in a single day by saying, "There are no patients, fill it up," Taşçı said, "The more full the intensive care unit is, the more money is earned."
10 THOUSAND PER BABY
In his defense, Taşçı also said that a doctor who was asked for help for a baby in critical condition said, "Pull the plug and be done with it," and stated that the manager of Şafak Hospital gave Fırat Sarı 10,000 TL for every baby transferred there.
