The National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission, established in the TBMM as part of the second reconciliation process dubbed 'Terror-Free Turkey' by the government and architected by MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli, continues its work.
In a statement made before the commission's 17th meeting, Bahçeli stated that the commission should go to İmralı to meet with terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan, and declared that if the commission does not make such a decision, he would take 3 of his colleagues and go to İmralı himself.
A vote on the visit to İmralı will be held at the commission's meeting on Friday, November 21. The votes of 31 members are needed for the İmralı 'visa' to be approved by the commission.
Bahçeli's move regarding İmralı drew sharp reactions from the IYI Party and the Victory Party (Zafer Partisi). IYI Party leader Müsavat Dervişoğlu expressed his reaction with the words, "Let them go."
AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in his party's group meeting yesterday, pointed to the reconciliation commission by stating, "I wholeheartedly believe that the commission will make the most correct and accurate decision for Turkey, for the secure future of Turkey, and for the unity and solidarity of our nation."
After the group meeting, journalists asked Erdoğan how he evaluated Bahçeli's move regarding İmralı. Erdoğan left this question unanswered.
All eyes are on the main opposition party, the CHP, ahead of the commission's meeting on Friday regarding İmralı. According to a report by Saygı Öztürk from Sözcü, the CHP's members of the reconciliation commission put the İmralı issue on the table during their meeting the previous evening. In the meeting, which lasted until 11:00 PM, 7 deputies voted against going to İmralı, while 4 deputies argued that they should go to İmralı and meet with terrorist leader Abdullah Öcalan.
The 7 deputies noted that going to İmralı would turn the leader of the terrorist organization PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, into a political figure and that this would harm the CHP. CHP Chairman Özgür Özel will make the final decision on the matter. Sources close to Özel noted that a decision against going to İmralı is expected.
According to the report, the decision of the CHP's reconciliation commission members regarding İmralı is as follows…
