Critical warning from Kandilli regarding the earthquake swarm in the Aegean: Areas at risk of tsunami identified!
The Kandilli Observatory has published a notable report regarding the ongoing seismic activity in the Aegean Sea. Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute has shared its 4th evaluation report with the public regarding the ongoing earthquake activity in the Aegean Sea.
The report includes critical warnings regarding the recent increase in earthquakes in the region and the potential tsunami risk.
1,513 EARTHQUAKES OCCURRED IN THE LAST WEEK
It was stated that between January 31 and February 7 (as of 09:00), a total of 1,513 earthquakes were recorded in the region, with the smallest being 1.2 and the largest being 5.3 in magnitude.
The statement emphasized that 108 of these earthquakes had a magnitude above 4.
TSUNAMI DANGER
According to the report compiled by Burak Demirbaş from Sözcü, attention was drawn to tsunamis that occurred following major earthquakes in the past.
It was recalled that during the 1956 Amorgos earthquake in the Southern Aegean, a 2.5-meter-high tsunami wave formed on the island of Kalymnos, and the flooding reached 1.5 kilometers inland from the coast.
It was stated that tsunami waves rose up to 1 meter on the Fethiye coast, causing flooding 250 meters inland.
TSUNAMI RISK FOR KAŞ AND THE GULF OF ANTALYA
The Kandilli Observatory report pointed out that the tsunami danger is high in certain regions of the Central and Eastern Mediterranean and the Aegean Sea.
It was stated that tsunami waves exceeding 3 meters could form, particularly in regions such as the Hellenic Arc, Southern Aegean, Tripoli, Eastern Sicily, and Southern Italy.
In Turkey, it was noted that it is possible for tsunami waves between 1 and 3 meters to form on the Kaş Peninsula and in the Gulf of Antalya. Experts emphasize that the seismic activity in the region must be closely monitored.
