Deputy signed instead of the Rector! First diploma cancellation notice sent

Istanbul University (IU) had cancelled the undergraduate diplomas of 28 people, including the imprisoned CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu, by a decision of the university's board of directors. The first notice regarding the cancellation decision has been received.

RECTOR AVOIDED SIGNING

A notable detail appeared in the notice. The notice dated May 8, which reached Batuhan Tuncay, an executive at the Eric-Laabs company, did not bear the signature of Istanbul University Rector Osman Bülent Zülfikar.

Instead, Prof. Dr. Yahya Güldiken signed it in his capacity as Acting Rector.

The notice sent to Tuncay included the following statement:

“With the provision numbered 3, adopted at the meeting of our University Board of Directors dated 18.03.2025 and numbered 61; it has been decided that, due to your irregular lateral transfer to the Faculty of Business Administration, Business Administration (English) Undergraduate Program in 1990, your lateral transfer decision and your graduation and diploma obtained based on this decision are to be revoked and cancelled on the grounds of 'non-existence' and 'obvious error'. Pursuant to the decision, your undergraduate graduation and diploma from the Faculty of Business Administration, Business Administration (English) Program have been cancelled.”

The diplomas of nine people, including Ekrem İmamoğlu, have been deleted from the database. Meanwhile, the diploma cancellation decision has not yet reached Imamoglu. The diploma was deleted from the IU database last week. It was noted that Imamoglu's master's degree diploma remains in the database. According to this situation, Imamoglu is still a higher education graduate.
