Earthquake alarm for Erzurum from Prof. Dr. Naci Görür: Compression continues

A 4.4 magnitude earthquake occurred yesterday in the Hınıs district of Erzurum. According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the tremor took place at 15:27 at a depth of 6.94 kilometers. The earthquake was also felt in the Erzurum city center and surrounding districts.

STATEMENT FROM NACİ GÖRÜR

Following the earthquake, Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made important statements, drawing attention to the tectonic activity in Eastern Anatolia. Stating that the compression in the region has increased, Görür warned that new earthquakes of similar magnitude could occur.

Görür said that while the fault line in Hınıs is not directly visible on maps, the region is under the influence of the compression in Eastern Anatolia.

In his post, Görür noted the following:

"A 4.3 magnitude earthquake occurred in Hınıs-Mollakulaç/Erzurum. The fault location is not clear on the MTA map, but it is north of the E-W trending fault zone extending between Varto and Karaağıl, just south of Hınıs. Eastern Anatolia is being compressed. It has further compressed the recent earthquakes. Similar earthquakes can be expected."

ACTIVE FAULT LINES IN TURKEY

The MTA has updated Turkey's active fault map and announced the provinces at first-degree earthquake risk. Among the cities located on a fault line are the following:

Aksaray, Aydın, Balıkesir, Bolu, Burdur, Bursa, Bingöl, Denizli, Eskişehir, Erzincan, Erzurum, Hakkari, Hatay, İzmir, Kahramanmaraş, Manisa, Muğla, Kocaeli, Konya, Osmaniye, Sakarya, and Tokat.

These provinces are considered regions where large-scale earthquakes could occur.

ERZURUM'S EARTHQUAKE RISK

According to MTA data, provinces carrying second-degree risk were also announced. Although the risk of a major earthquake is lower in these regions, tremors that could create destructive effects may still occur. Among the risky provinces are the following:

İstanbul (1st and 2nd zone), Tekirdağ, Bitlis, Van, Adıyaman, Şırnak, Zonguldak, Afyon, Samsun, Antalya, Erzurum, Kars, Ardahan, Batman, Iğdır, Elazığ, Diyarbakır, Adana, Eskişehir, Malatya, Kütahya, Çankırı, Uşak, Ağrı, and Çorum.
